Risk Management
Operating across Africa's most dynamic markets requires disciplined risk management. Lycia embeds structured risk assessment and mitigation into every engagement, protecting our clients, our partners and our institutional integrity.
Structured. Proportionate. Embedded.
Lycia's risk management framework is designed to identify, assess and manage the full range of risks arising from our advisory and commercial activities in African markets. The framework applies at the institutional level — governing Lycia's own operations — and at the engagement level, where it informs the risk intelligence and mitigation advice we provide to clients.
Our risk management approach is proportionate to the nature and complexity of each engagement. Simple advisory mandates attract a streamlined risk assessment; complex, multi-jurisdictional transactions or investments attract a comprehensive risk analysis process involving all relevant practice areas.
Risk management at Lycia is not a separate function — it is embedded into our engagement processes, our compliance programme and our governance structures. Every principal is responsible for identifying and managing risks within their area of practice, with escalation protocols ensuring that material risks receive appropriate senior management attention.
Risk Appetite Framework
Risk appetite levels reflect Lycia's institutional tolerance for each category. Zero Tolerance = no acceptable level of exposure.
Risks We Identify & Manage
Political Risk
Political instability, changes in government policy, nationalisation risk, civil unrest and diplomatic disruption affecting commercial and advisory operations in African jurisdictions.
Regulatory Risk
Changes to licensing requirements, sector-specific regulations, tax regimes, foreign exchange controls and investment rules that affect client engagements and commercial arrangements.
Commercial Risk
Market demand changes, project delays, counterparty performance failures, contract disputes and price volatility affecting the commercial viability of transactions and investments.
Counterparty Risk
The risk that clients, partners, suppliers or buyers fail to meet their contractual obligations due to financial difficulty, legal issues, regulatory sanctions or reputational problems.
Supply Chain Risk
Disruptions to supply chains arising from logistics failures, border delays, infrastructure breakdowns, supplier insolvency or commodity shortages in African markets.
Logistics Risk
Freight disruptions, port congestion, customs delays, cross-border infrastructure constraints and last-mile delivery challenges affecting trade flows and project execution.
Security Risk
Physical security risks to personnel, assets and operations arising from crime, civil unrest, terrorism or conflict in specific markets or regions where Lycia operates or advises.
Currency & FX Risk
Currency devaluation, exchange control restrictions, illiquidity in local currency markets and difficulty repatriating funds in African jurisdictions with managed or restricted exchange regimes.
Market Risk
Commodity price volatility, interest rate movements, capital flow changes and broader macroeconomic developments affecting the value and viability of investment and trade positions.
Reputation Risk
The risk that association with clients, counterparties or transactions that subsequently attract adverse scrutiny damages Lycia's reputation and institutional standing in its markets.
Operational Risk
Internal failures of process, systems, people or governance that result in errors, delays or compliance failures affecting client service quality or regulatory obligations.
Risk Monitoring & Mitigation Process
Risk Identification
Systematic identification of risks across all dimensions — market, counterparty, operational, compliance, security and reputational — for each engagement and market context.
Risk Assessment
Evaluation of identified risks by probability and impact, calibrated against Lycia's risk appetite and the specific risk profile of the client and engagement.
Risk Prioritisation
Ranking of assessed risks to focus management attention and resource allocation on the exposures of greatest potential consequence.
Mitigation Planning
Development of proportionate mitigation measures for material risks, including contractual protections, due diligence requirements, information barriers and contingency plans.
Monitoring & Review
Ongoing monitoring of risk indicators and regular review of the risk register to capture new developments and reassess the status of identified risks.
Reporting & Escalation
Regular reporting of material risks to management and — where relevant — to clients, with defined escalation protocols for emerging risks requiring immediate management attention.
